The FreeRace HCL is a user-friendly, tight-sleeved version of the Slalom HCL incorporating the technology developed for our top-level racing sails. Outline and 3D shaping are similar to the Slalom series with a seven batten, 0/1/2/3 cam-option configuration. The FreeRace HCL also utilizes our patent-applied-for Hansen Compliant Leech (HCL) technology which allows a sail to compliantly adjust both foil shape and twist automatically according to wind pressure and sheeting angle. The result is an extremely versatile sail with extended range that not only excels in light air acceleration, power and pointing but also overpowered gust response and handling. The simplicity of the FreeRace HCL's tight sleeve and lighter weight along with improved durability is particularly desirable to performance-minded sailors looking for speed and power along with reliability and ease of use. The FreeRace HCL is RDM compatible and variety of cam options allows sailors to adjust the structure to their individual preference and sailing style.

Features include:

1. 4 specifically-tuned HCL elastic inserts for optimal leech compliance over a wide range of conditions.
2. Larger head with free-pivoting head battens for better off-wind angle and drive.
3. Straight leech planform for optimal upwind drive and maximized area.
4. Steeper foot sweep near the clew for easier handling in transitions.
5. Improved roller cams for cleaner leading edge entry.
6. Retractable sail storage strap.

Improvements for 2008 include:

1. Lower HCL inserts have a higher compliance frequency for a tighter leech and quicker gust response.
2. Revised HCL front reinforcing.
3. Revised cam offsets for easier rigging.
4. Revised Tack Pulley position for easier downhaul.
5. Revised luff curve.

Construction is durable yet light with 100% fully glued and reinforced seams. The luff is two-piece with vertical Dacron and warp X-Ply sections for locked-in shape, flexibility and strength. The sail body is stepped thickness monofilm with warp-oriented 3 strand X-ply, Dacron and Mylar reinforcing in the foot, clew and head. All batten pockets, reinforcing patches and plys are symmetrical on both sides of the sail to minimize port/starboard variations. Full small grid X-ply body and monofilm or large grid X-ply window options are available on a custom-order basis. Battens are composite tube/rod constructions with flex and stiffness specifically designed for each location in the sail. Batten adjustment is controlled by internal-screw tensioners.

Available in red, white or black, in monofilm construction, or with X-Ply and a PVC window via special order. X-Ply option is $100 extra.
